A horse. Humm. For many years the horse or pony was the main form of traction underground. They stayed in underground stables, and were only rarely brought to the surface for exercise. I believe that there is a small private mine operating today using horses.

Nowadays of course, most horses and ponies are bought for children to ride. Many of my schoolfriends (girls mostly) "had a pony". I always wondered, given the trouble my sister and I had looking after a dog, how many parents regreted the purchase.

Directions

This view is West, and the next (well, next in my scheme of things, but you may be travelling in a different direction) photo was taken by turning around and facing East. It suits me however to say that it was a little further down the road to the South...
