Martin Angove's Utterly Pointless tour of the Aber Valley

Hendrederwen, or possibly Hendre'r Derwen

A road, a hillside and a mix of old and newer houses, December 2002

Further up the hill from the square is an area of completely mixed-up housing. Yes, there are the terraces but as you can see in this photograph there is also some 1960s housing (rightish), 1970s housing (to the left), 1980s housing (in the distance, to the rear) and two houses which are of a similar vintage to the terraces.

The large building just right of centre in this photograph is Hendrederwen Hall, built for the mine owner originally. It is special to me because my parents very nearly bought it in the early 80s and we had the tour. Despite needing some renovation work it was a grand building - it even had four huge attic rooms. It was later sold to be a nursing home though I believe it to be privately owned again now.

The large white house behind the 1960s houses on the right of the photograph is Plas something, and belonged to the mine captain or deputy. We also viewed this house, but events conspired to keep us from buying this too.
