Martin Angove's Utterly Pointless tour of the Aber Valley

The Abermill Nursing home and the start of Thomas Street

Continuing West brings you eventually to the Abermill Nursing Home - named after a mill that used to stand by the stream near this location. Closer examination will reveal that this is built of the same stone as most of the original buildings in the village. It looks like a school, and indeed it was a school.

It ceased as a school in the late 1970s, and was infamous as being the place where school dinners came from. My school, Ysgol Ifor Bach's kitchen was closed, and our meals were transported from this building in large metal containers. Needless to say, we didn't enjoy the experience.

When that rôle ended the building became the Welsh School of Musical Instrument Making and Repair. As such, it was one of only two in the U.K. This phase didn't last long however, and the building fell into decay until its conversion into a Nursing Home for the Elderly. It now has some twenty residents.
