Martin Angove's Utterly Pointless tour of the Aber Valley

The Windsor Hotel and colliery site

The Windsor Hotel with colliery site in background.

The Windsor Hotel (sorry for chopping the top off) is the traditional boundary between Abertridwr and Senghenydd although the actual sign is a few yards up the road. It sits at the entrance to the Windsor colliery, which was opened in 189x, some time later than the Universal in Senghenydd. The remains of the colliery site can just be glimpsed behind the pub, but as with so many such sites in the valleys, all that was visible when this photograph was taken in 1996 was a flat area covered with thin grass and scrub bushes. The pub itself has been remodelled several times, and the original entrance (at the front in the picture) is now blocked up. I did take two new photographs in December 2002, but I couldn't get a decent shot, especially as there are now traffic lights at this junction, so you'll have to make do with this older one. Nothing much else has changed except that they've stuck a Sky Digital dish on the side of the pub :-)

Recently a new housing estate has been built on much of the old colliery site. I've not done a very good job, but there are some picture up if you follow the road to the West.
