Martin Angove's Utterly Pointless tour of the Aber Valley

Aber Square's new public area and artwork

Overall view of public area with central plinth.

The pair below is a stereo pair. Uses the "cross-eyes" method as I have placed the picture for your right eye on the left and left eye on the right. If you see the pictures on top of each other rather than side-by-side I'm sorry, but you need to make your browser window at least 920 pixels wide. This shouldn't be a problem if you work at 1024 by 768 or more, though you may have to hit "refresh" too. Without making the pictures too small to be worthwhile there's nothing I can do about it. The trees look a bit odd because the wind blew the leaves in between the two pictures.

Welcome to the newly-revamped Abertridwr square. The pictures above are all taken facing North and if you have visited the other locations it might help to note that the Panteg and the bus shelters are on your left.

As part of the works, artwork was comissioned from various organisations linked to the valley. Below are photographs of each piece. By the way, if you are visually impaired at all, these are well worth a feel as they are "cast" pieces.

St Cenydd School

Artwork by Saint Cenydd school. Faces and hills.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni

Artwork by Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni. Hills, sheep, houses.

This was my secondary school. My year opened the schools - in Aberbargoed in 1981 and in 1983 in Bargoed. The building was ropey even before I left and they've finally built a new one in Fleur-de-Lys which opened this year, 2002.

Ysgol Ifor Bach

Artwork by Ysgol Ifor Bach. Stormclouds, rugby posts, sheep and singing.

And this was my primary school. It's on the tour, but in keeping with the rest you'll have to find your own way there. Hint: it's in Senghenydd!

Cwm Aber Infants

Artwork by Cwm Aber Infant school. Central ring of children holding hands surrounded by hills, sun and moon.

These are also on the tour... somewhere :-)

Cwm Aber Juniors

Artwork by Cwm Aber Juniors. People, hills, houses.

On the tour too...

YMCA

Artwork by the YMCA. Netball player, houses, some kind of marshal arts person.

Guess what? Yup...

Public Houses

Artwork featuring Aber's pubs. The Pant, a road and some nondescipt other things, possibly the Rose and Crown.

Cronin's Gym

Artwork by Cronin's Gym. Houses, winding gear and various sporting and drinking activities.

"The Church"

Artwork by the churches.

The central text reads "Before I was Born the Lord Called Me" and top and bottom are (I suppose) the names of various churches to have been in the area; (top line) Beulah Capel y Bedyddwyr. Capel Annibynwyr Nazareth. Eglwysilan. (bottom line) Apostolic. Wesleyan. Abertridwr Community Church. English Cong.
